Electric RC Model Airplane Build Supplies

Even foam RC airplanes require a bit of assembly, so here are some products that we have found very reliable and useful. While we list them with links to online vendors, many of these items are easily found in Home Depot, Lowe's , Staples, etc.

epoxy for your model airplane

5 Minute Epoxy

The choice of glue is very important, as many glues eat through foam. Some people like to use foam safe CA glue, but we've found that 5 min. epoxy works great. It hardens and makes permanent bonds, and is great for attaching major parts and making repairs.

glue gun for your foam electric airplane

Hot Glue Gun

For some work, you will need a decent hot glue gun. Hot Glue makes non-permanent bonds, and its best used to secure parts you may remove.

knife for cutting your radio controlled airplane

Xacto knife

While many people use larger razors, I find most foam work benefits from precision cutting tools such as the Xacto knife. There are many situations where you might need to cut into the foam, and this is the tool you will want to do it with.

tape for holding together your electric model airplane

Packing Tape

Packing tape is essential for belly landing, in order to protect the bottom of your aircraft. I also like to put it on the wing and tail edges, to protect the plane in case of a crash. You may also use it in "on the field" repairs. Fiber reinforced tape is also made for special situations (it can be used as hinges for the control surfaces).

velcro to put on your RC plane

Industrial Strength Velcro

Velcro is essential for securing receivers, batteries and any other part you want easily removed from the plane. The product linked is very strong and seems to work very well. It is a continuous 2 inch wide strip, and you simply cut it to size.

non stick scissors

Non-Stick Scissors

You will need a good pair of scissors for cutting velcro and tape. I find myself using these a lot, and having the "non-stick" kind will help prevent the glue from accumulating.

Carbon Rods

Carbon rods are essential for reinforcing your plane's weak points. To reinforce a weak point: Cut the rod to size, and embed it 1/3 of the way into your foam, then secure it with Epoxy. Carbon rods come in different sizes so that they can be used with different sized planes an different sized surfaces. When you embed your rod into the foam, a correctly sized rod should be almost completely submerged.
